SSC or staff selection commission is one of the well-known and prestigious recruitment agencies for the government of India.

Every year the staff selection commission conducts many examinations for various type of posts in the government organizations.

These posts require several skills and knowledge and typing skill is one of those.

Typing test is one of the stages of the selection process. In the SSC CHSL segment typing test is an important skill test to recruit candidates for various posts in the government organizations such as – Postal assistant, Data entry operator, LDC etc.

 

What is SSC CHSL?

SSC CHSL is an examination process by the staff selection commission to select candidates with higher secondary qualifications.

CHSL stands for the combined higher secondary level. Only the students who are 12th passed and are 18 years old or above can apply for the combined higher secondary level examination.

The staff selection commission conducts combined higher secondary level examination every year for thousands of posts through 3 stage examination process where typing test is the most important stage.

 

 Exam structure of SSC CHSL

CHSL examination is conducted in three series – Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3. Tier 1 is a computer-based multiple-choice question exam where Tier 2 is the descriptive test and Tier 3 is the skill test also known as DEST or typing test.

The typing test for 10+2 or CHSL determines the final selection of the candidate for that particular government post.

 

 SSC CHSL typing test process

 SSC CHSL typing test is only for candidates who select Posts of Postal Assistants, Lower division clerk, court clerks etc.

SSC CHSL typing test is conducted in both Hindi and English.

The typing speed to qualify for English typists is 35 WPM while for Hindi typists it’s 30 WPM.

The candidate has to type on the computer while managing the speed and accuracy.

The total time duration of this will be 10 minutes.

Visually handicapped candidates are given a total of 30 minutes of time.

Candidates will be given a printed paper that they have to type on a computer screen. There would be 1750 key depressions in the English typing test paper while in the Hindi paper there will be 900 key depressions.

 

 SSC CHSL typing test speed and font

 

·       The required speed for the English typing test in the SSC CHSL is 10500 key depressions in one hour.

For the Hindi typing test, this will be 9000 per hour.

·       Candidates are required to have 30 WPM of typing speed for Hindi typing while candidates need to have 35 words per minute for the English Typing Test. This means the candidate has to type at least 30 words for Hindi and 35 words for English in one minute.

·       The typing test for SS CHSL is conducted for 10 minutes so the candidate is expected to type around 350 words in 10 minutes with accuracy.

·       The typing test for the SSC Combined higher secondary level exam will be based on the Hindi Mangal Font.




 Cut off of SSC CSHL typing test

 Cut off plays an important role in the last selection of the candidates for the SSC CHSL examination. However, the exact cut off might change with every new notification by the Staff selection commission. Students can understand the cut off system for the SSC CHSL typing test through the previous year notifications.

Once the candidates clear this typing test they are qualified for the document verification round. Here is the cut off of the SSC CHSL typing test for the posts of Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, Lower division clerks etc. –

 

·       For the candidates from the SC, OBC, ST, HH, VH and Ex-servicemen category the cut off is 10% which means there should max of 10% mistakes in the typed text. On the other hand, it is 7% for the candidates of the General category.

·       Apart from the SSC CHSL typing test the cut off for the SSC CHSL DEST is also determined. The cut off in the DEST for SC, ST, OBC, PH, HH, VH and Ex-servicemen is 7% where it is 5% for the General category. Here DEST stands for the Data entry skill test which is the skill test for only Data entry operator posts.

 SSC CHSL typing test mistakes

There can be two types of mistakes in the Staff selection commission combined higher secondary level typing test, these are –

 

Full mistakes

Full mistakes are considered for

·       Each exclusion of figure or word.

·       Each wrong word or figure substitution.

·       Each word or figure addition that is not in the passage.

 

Half mistakes

These are considered as half mistakes in the SSC CHSL typing test –

·       If there is no space provide between two words such as “ I have”.

·       If there is undesired space between the words and characters such as – “ I have”

·       If there is any kind of spelling error such as repetition, addition or transposition, exclusion, the substitution of letters or characters.

·       If there is any wrong use of capital letters for even small letters or if there is the wrong use of small letters for capital letters. However, this mistake is not applicable in the Hindi typing test.

Is there any typing test in SSC CHSL?

 Yes, there is a typing test in the SSC CHSL examination. Candidates can give this typing test in both English and Hindi whatever suits them.

The typing test is divided into two parts. One is DEST which is for the post of data entry operator and another is typing test which is for all other posts such as Postal assistant, lower division clerk etc. this typing test of SSC CHSL is qualifying in nature.

 

 What is the typing speed for SSC CHSL?

 The required typing speed for the SSC CHSL English typing test is 35 words per minute while for the Hindi typing test it is 30 words per minute.

 

 Is typing necessary for SSC CHSL?

 

Yes, an average typing speed is necessary to qualify the Staff selection combined higher secondary level examination as the third and last main round of the exam is a skill and typing test.
